Statistics

A 1992 news release from the U.S. Census Bureau entitled Characteristics of Business Owners Survey states that "Nearly half of the 17 million small businesses in the United States were home-based…" "More than 14 million of the 17 million small businesses in the United States (82 percent) were owner-operated and had no paid employees."

Statistics about Small & Large Businesses from the U.S. Census Bureau makes the following statements: "Nearly three-quarters of all U.S. businesses have no payroll. Most are self-employed persons operating unincorporated businesses, and may or may not be the owner's principal source of income. Because nonemployers account for only about 3 percent of business receipts, they are not included in most business statistics, for example, most reports from the 1992 Economic Census."  (Outrageous isn't it that our government ignores three-quarters of all U.S. businesses).  See the following Nonemployer Statistics.

Nonemployer Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau provides information on businesses that have no employees.

U.S. Business Statistics is another good source of information from the U.S. Census bureau.

Characteristics of Business Owners from the 1992 U.S. Economic Census is a .pdf file on the Internet.  It has over 311 pages of valuable information.  It contains a great deal of information on Little Businesses such as home-based businesses and other very small businesses.  The document number is CBO92-1 and can be obtained from the Administrative and Customer Services Division, Bureau of  the Census, Washington, DC 20233-1900, phone  (301)457-4100.
